From small leak to big repair: how water damages your home over time

Many homeowners see a small water stain and think “I’ll watch it and see if it gets worse.” The problem is that water rarely fixes itself. Over time, even small leaks can create big problems.

Where water likes to sneak in

In the homes we work on across South Sydney and the Illawarra, the most common entry points are:

  • Balconies and terraces

  • Roofs and flashings

  • Window and door heads

  • Bathrooms and wet areas

  • Rising damp from the ground

A tiny gap in a membrane or flashing can let a lot of water in during a storm.

What water does inside your walls

Once water gets into your structure it can:

  • Rot timber and weaken framing

  • Rust steel lintels and reinforcement

  • Break down render and coatings

  • Cause mould and health issues inside the home

This is why we always look for the cause of water ingress, not just fix the cosmetic damage.

Typical repairs we carry out

Depending on where the water is coming from, we might recommend:

  • Balcony waterproofing to replace failed membranes

  • Roof repairs and new flashings to keep water out at the top

  • Damp proof course (DPC) injections for rising damp in lower walls

  • Cavity flashing repairs and better drainage

We then repair internal finishes once we know the source is under control.

When to act

If you see any of the following, it is time to investigate:

  • Brown stains on ceilings or walls

  • Peeling paint or bubbling plaster

  • Persistent musty smells

  • Mould appearing in corners or behind furniture

Early action usually means smaller, more focused remedial work.
